I was working for a regional news station and which included a lot of unpaid overtime and being on call over the weekend. Taking holidays was very frowned upon as we were understaffed. I had a stomach ache one day which was so painful I had to go to the doctor, it turns out I had to have an emergency appendicitis. After surgery I wasn’t allowed to lift heavy things for a couple of weeks and they guilted me for it every single day. My camera equipment was pretty heavy but I sucked it up, and went back to work despite doctor’s orders. I think it prolonged the healing time because I was in so much pain for a couple of months. When I eventually left no one bothered to say thanks or wish me off well, I cried all the way home – I wasn’t sure because I was glad to leave or because they treated me so poorly.
